People in St Cuthbert's

On this page, you will find information about some people (including both clergy and lay people) who have particular roles in our church community.

Clergy

Rector: The Revd. Stephen Parsons
Stephen Parsons

Stephen Parsons, the Rector of St Cuthbert's Colinton had a varied ministry in the Church of England before coming to Scotland in 2003. His theological training began at Keble College, Oxford and was continued at Cuddesdon College before ordination as deacon in 1970. During his early student years, he also fitted in some time abroad studying in Greece and Switzerland, furthering his interest in ecumenical studies and Eastern Orthodoxy. After ordination and three years in an inner city parish as a curate, he returned to Oxford to spend two further years studying for a research degree in the liturgy of the Orthodox church. A further curacy in Kent followed before he became Vicar of Lugwardine with two other villages in Herefordshire. He also acted as the Bishop of Hereford's Ecumenical Officer. More recently from 1987 he served as Vicar of Lechlade in Gloucestershire where he remained until his appointment to Colinton in August 2003.

Stephen has many interests and enthusiasms to bring to his work. He has for many years been interested in the ministry of healing in the Church and two of his three published books concern this topic. He has also made a study of the charismatic/evangelical wing of the church and the Christian ministry of deliverance. He possesses a particular concern for those who find themselves victims of cults, whether Christian or otherwise. As well as continuing his wider interests, he has a vision for the people of St Cuthbert's, to help them in their growth towards their goal of being a learning, growing, as well as a deeply caring congregation.

Assistant priest: The Revd. Douglas Yeoman
Douglas Yeoman

Douglas has been a non-stipendiary assistant at St Cuthbert's since 1996. He retired in 1995 after 43 years working in insurance. He was ordained as a non-stipendiary priest to St Martin's Tynecastle in Edinburgh in 1978. He was one of a team serving St Luke's Wester Hailes from 1979 to 1990. Douglas was Episcopal chaplain to Gogarburn Hospital from 1995 until 1999 when it closed. He has continued an interest in mental health issues, serving as chaplain to three wards in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital since 1998. He sings in the St Cuthbert's choir. Douglas was born in Leith, just down the road from Edinburgh city centre and brings to our ministry team intimate knowledge of Edinburgh and its ways.

Choir

The Choir Junior Choir

The Choir leads the musical worship at the Choral Eucharist on Sunday Mornings. The Psalms are normally sung to Anglican Chants, although we have been experimenting with Responsorial Psalms during Lent and Advent. There is normally an Anthem sung during the Communion.

The choir also sings at Evensong on the first Sunday of each month. There are occasional Choral Evensongs when the choir uses different Responses and an Anthem.

There are five Sopranos, three Altos, three Tenors and four Basses, which makes a good balance.

Eight children between the ages of 9 and 14 join the Choir for a service once a month and for festivals. They rehearse twice a month and follow the RSCM Voice for Life programme. The Choir sings a variety of music from Tye to Rutter with much in between. We are fortunate to have a pool of Organists who take Choir Practice and play on Sundays - a system, which works surprisingly well. Choir Practice is on Thursday Evenings at 7.30.
