This page acts as a guide to some of the regular activities of the church, including services and other events.
Services
A number of different types of service are held at St Cuthbert's throughout the week. Services follow the traditional patterns of the Episcopal Church, but use modern language for the liturgy and the readings, and some also include music, sung by both the congregation and the choir. The services of Holy Communion (also called the Eucharist) are our central act of worship as a Christian community, but everyone is very welcome at any service. All services are held in the main church building on Westgarth Avenue unless otherwise stated.
Sunday services
8.30 am: Holy Communion (said)
10.30 am: Sung Eucharist
A sung service of Holy Communion with a sermon - see specimen service and explanation of liturgy. Sunday School takes place during the school term. The service is followed by coffee in the Church Hall
6.00 pm: Evensong
(This service is held on the first Sunday of most months)
Weekday services
Wednesday 10.30 am: Holy Communion (said)
Followed by coffee in the Church Hall.
Thursday 2.30 pm: The Thursday Service
This is an ecumenical service led by a team (see photo) from Colinton Parish Church and St Cuthbert's. It caters mainly for the elderly but is open to anyone.
Each of the leaders has a different approach but we sing two, sometimes three hymns. There is a bible reading and a short commentary on it or perhaps the emphasis might be on a topical subject. We pray for the world and our Community.
An important part of the meeting is tea and biscuits in the hall with time to catch up on what we have been doing since last week. We have an informal Communion marking the Festivals of the Church such as Easter and Harvest.
Other events
A number of regular events also take place throughout the week.
Sundays: Westgarth Walkers
The Westgarth Walkers meet on occasional Sundays. Since we started in 1995 we have walked regularly on a Sunday following the 10.30 morning service. We invite people who are not members of our church to join us. Most of our walks are within an hour's drive and generally last up to five hours. We mostly carry a picnic lunch and if not eaten at the car park by our hungry members we stop at a suitable spot on the way. Apart from the physical exercise and wellbeing of the country air, we also exercise our tongues! This is a really friendly part of our group and nobody is left on their own for long. On occasion we call in at a local hostelry for refreshment and convivial surroundings. The number of walkers can be anything from eight to nineteen, according to commitments and the weather. Our Annual Dinner is always a great social event.
